Overview
Established as a 501 (c)(3) in 2003, HealthNet Albemarle addresses the region’s most pressing health care needs of our most vulnerable populations. 100% of our patient population is comprised of uninsured and underserved adults. Our Clinic and Pharmacy in Elizabeth City serves a rural six county catchment area: Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans plus provides specialist referral services for Dare County. The Clinic provides access to primary care, preventive care, full dispensing pharmacy, brand medication assistance, diagnostic services, translation services, pre-diabetes program, access to overdose prevention kits, liaison to specialty care including behavioral and mental health services, patient education for the management of diabetes, and case management for chronic diseases. Programs are designed to improve access to primary and preventive care through community collaboration, telemedicine, and a dedicated pursuit to health equity.
- We are part of the critical safety net in the communities that we serve, which strives to ensure that unmet health needs aren’t leaving people vulnerable to long-term issues. Because of our work, 16,000+ patients served since our founding in 2003 have received access to health care in Pasquotank, Perquimans, Camden, Currituck, Chowan, and Dare counties.
- We serve thousands of residents who do not have adequate health insurance coverage or access to care they need.
- We provide a comprehensive solution for patients in need. From diagnosis through treatment, patients receive care at minimal cost to them.
- We partner with care providers, hospitals, clinics and other community-based organizations to connect the most vulnerable in our community to the care and services they need.
- We provide comprehensive care coordination to help providers care for those in need.
- Our providers spend their time on what matters — delivering life-changing care.
- We help our neighbors in need, creating a healthier community for all.
- We are good stewards of donations we receive. Small investments produce life-changing care. A recent survey by the North Carolina Association of Free & Charitable Clinics revealed that $414 returns $3,874 in treatment! Last year we provided $11,255,852 value in services and saved $12,670,780 in Emergency Room costs. Financial support from individuals and sponsor organizations enables us to keep this important community service available for those in need.
History
The pharmacy program began as the Community Prescription Project in 1992. The medical services began in 2000 and became the Hope Clinic. The Hope Clinic provided pharmacy services one day a week and primary care services one evening a week. In May 2004, the Hope Clinic merged with the Albemarle Hospital Foundation to create the Community Care Clinic which expanded hours to four days a week. It was established to provide medical and pharmacy services to the uninsured and underserved in our community.
The Community Care Clinic was operated by the Albemarle Hospital Foundation, which is a non-profit 501C3 tax-exempt corporation, from 2004-2024. In 2024 the name was changed to HealthNet Albemarle to better reflect our role as a healthcare safety-net for our communities. We are funded by grants and support from Sentara Healthcare, The Duke Endowment, churches, the medical community, civic groups, and regional and state healthcare foundations.
The Clinic has a goal to serve, with professionalism and compassion, the healthcare needs of our community.
